“I really look forward to growing in my faith at Summit 2018” by Garrett Godsey

Hello Everyone!

My name is Garrett Godsey. I attend Friends Community Church in Brea, California.

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the 2014 summit. From what I understand, it was a life changing experience! I am lucky, however, to be involved in planning the 2018 Friends Summit!

In November, a group of young adults from all around the country met to discuss what we want in Summit 2018 and how we can implement those things. I have to say, I am so excited for these discussions! There are going to be some great topics to go over. I really look forward to growing in my faith at Summit 2018 and seeing what the Lord has for me. I truly feel like He will be moving mightily in the hearts of the young adults in His Church.

I am also very excited about strengthening the relationships I have within my young adult group and building new ones with the people I will meet from around the US! It is going to be such a blast.

We will be meeting at the Marriott Denver Tech
Center in Colorado. I had the chance to stay there in November with planning team and it is so beautiful!
I cannot wait to see what summit will bring. God is doing mighty things through the Friends denomination! I hope to see you at summit! Come prepared to encounter your creator! Be blessed.

In Him,
Garrett Godsey

Denver Here We Come! by Sarah Hubbard

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah Hubbard and I go to Battle Creek Friends Church in Battle Creek, Michigan!  When I went to Summit 2014 and was looking forward to Summit 2018, it seemed so far away, I can’t believe it is almost upon us! How exciting!

When I look back on Summit 2014, I remember great conversations with the young adults from my church and from other Friends churches. It was so cool to connect with them and ring in the new year together! I was younger than most of the people there, which scared me at first, but I learned so much from the speakers, sessions, and conversations. I learned about successful leadership in the church and outside in day-to-day life. My church brought home inspiration and many new ideas on how to build intentional relationships and how to better serve the people around us. The experience of meeting and talking with other young adults that had the same mission and passion as me was really refreshing.

I am looking forward to Summit 2018 in Denver, CO for so many reasons! I am excited to see people that I connected with at Summit 2014, and I am excited to have more conversations with them and see how they implemented the ideas and missions that we talked about 3 years ago. I am also looking forward to meeting new friends from all over the country! I am eager to just hang out with all the people there! It was so much fun to travel and get closer with the group from my church, while making friends with other churches! The games and activities that we did were hilarious and entertaining. I am also excited to be in Denver, I have never been there before!

In the end, it all comes down to building relationships with each other and with God. Summit certainly inspires both.. I’m excited to see you all there! Denver here we come!

Wishing you love, light, and blessings always,

Sarah

New Year by Katie Newton

Hello Friends, near and far! Happy New Years to you. My name is Katie Newton and I am a part of the Mid America Yearly Meeting. I had the opportunity to work at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Oregon this past summer and spend some time with the Northwest Yearly Meeting, and I attended Friends Summit 2014 and met many Friends from all over. It seems hard to believe that 2018 has welcomed us already and that Friends Summit 2018 is now only 12 months away! I remember last Summit so vividly and how incredible of an experience it was for me to make friends that I have still kept connected with today. Because of this, I get so excited as we near the arrival of this Friends gathering.

New Years Eve and New Years Day are always such a bittersweet experience. In some ways for me, I have always felt it to be a bit overrated, but in other ways I always find beauty in closing off one year and beginning a new one. I suppose sometimes fresh starts are more anticipated than other times, so new years can bring about many emotions. Ever since junior high, my NYE plans have always consisted of celebrating at an EFM-MAYM winter conference with students from other Friends churches and that means I have always had the privilege of welcoming in the new year surrounded by healthy community, and this year was no exception. We just had our annual event called ReGENERATION where we dove into the message of discerning what it looks like for us to live into the Kingdom of God in our everyday lives. As I enjoyed journeying with junior high and high school students through these topics, I feel great excitement for a similar experience next December at Summit with young adults who are coming from similar (and yet extremely different) backgrounds.

As we have 12 months that stand between now and this gathering of people, there is so much to come. While we can’t know what this year will bring, I pray a blessing on you as you read this in anticipation for this new year. I challenge you to look for God in the ordinary things in life as we remember that God’s Kingdom is here and now. I challenge you to remind yourself that you belong to hope now; if this year brings you deep and dark valley’s, Heaven isn’t all that far and we are still becoming who we are. If this year is full of abundant blessings and great achievements, praise be! Let us live into these next twelve months with a level of intentionality, that we might be able to come together as Christ’s Body in December to share our joys, struggles, lessons learned, and all that 2018 is to bring. Remember these words that Paul taught us in Philippians 4:4-7,”Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I look forward to meeting/hanging out with you all at the end of the year!!!

Peace in His name and mine,
Katie
